What do you love most about working at Honest?
I’m pretty sure most of my co-workers have said the same thing, but I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with. Coming from a very small non-profit, I was a little uncertain as to how I would feel about working at a larger company, but during my first week I couldn’t stop noticing how kind everyone was. That feeling hasn’t faded, and I’m so grateful. When you’re working long hours at breakneck speeds (start-up life!), having supportive and friendly co-workers makes all the difference. Being able to do something you love with great people is pretty awesome. Being in HR also has made it possible to get to know each new employee, so I love the fact that I can say I know everyone. I welcome any of my co-workers to challenge me in naming everyone in the office!
What is your favorite product?
Don’t be silly — choosing just one would be impossible! My apartment is an embarrassing display of my love for Honest products, but my favorites are our cleaning products. I have a hot date with them every Sunday. The products truly make cleaning enjoyable (did I really just say that?), and I don’t have to worry about having difficulty breathing or my skin and eyes burning like I do with conventional cleaning products.
What is your most memorable Honest moment?
When I first started at Honest, I made it my mission to keep our office kitchen clean (I’m really making myself sound like a neat freak), which meant getting everyone to put their dirty dishes in the dishwasher. I figured humor was the best way to encourage this, so I began posting a different Internet meme in the kitchen every day, changing the message to be dishwasher related. It was so fun to watch my co-workers have a good laugh each morning, and miraculously the dishes started landing in the dishwasher! I shouldn’t be surprised. We DID have Ryan Gosling telling us, “Hey girl, I think it’s really stylish when you put your dishes in the dishwasher.” Apparently Honest employees can’t resist the Ryan Gosling charm.
How do you embrace the Honest lifestyle at home?
I moved across the country (Boston, represent!) to work for Honest because I believe passionately in living the Honest lifestyle. Five years ago, I feverishly began doing research about the toxins that are in home products, personal care products, makeup, and food. Everyone seemed to have a story about someone they knew becoming seriously ill with no explanation, and I wanted to learn why that might be happening. I adopted the philosophy of doing the best I could within my means to live a non-toxic lifestyle and slowly began overhauling different aspects of my life. I transitioned to a plant-based diet and switched to healthier personal care products. Once I felt confident in those things, I eliminated toxic cleaning products and as many dangerous items from my home as possible. Now that I have a handle on those areas of my life, I’ve started to replace the conventional items in my makeup bag with cosmetics that have far fewer scary ingredients.
I believe that living the Honest lifestyle is about actively taking part in the process of making healthier choices rather than the unattainable goal of non-toxic perfection. Maya Angelou said, “When you know better, you do better,” and I think we’re all constantly learning and adjusting to try to do better for our loved ones and ourselves.
If you weren’t at work, what would you be doing?
I went to music school where I studied guitar and songwriting, and music is the love of my life, so I try to spend as much time as I can writing and playing music. When I’m not busy being a total rock star, I love getting in some weight training at the gym, trying out new recipes, exploring Los Angeles, daydreaming about being on my favorite lake in Maine, and trying to resist the temptress that is Netflix. I usually fail miserably at that last one.
